To help build a better world for future generations, parents should join their kids in learning about climate change, its effects on our earth, and what families can do together to be a part of the solution. We’ve got advice on how to talk to your kids about the climate crisis, actions for the whole family to take, and recommended books and videos to expand your knowledge.
-
Engage in honest and meaningful conversation with your kids about climate change and what you as a family can do to be a part of the solution.
-
Take the time to learn from a variety of sources to equip yourself and your family with the knowledge needed to combat the climate crisis.
-
Connect with other families and members of the Solar Champion community to share inspiration and actions, and help grow our solar movement.
-
Go outside to learn about the world around us, to connect with others through nature, and to be inspired to fight for the natural world we love.
While corporations and governments need to make large-scale policy changes that reduce our global carbon emissions, there are also actions families can take together to help lessen their own impact on the planet.
Younger kids can help by turning off lights and learning to reuse and recycle. Older kids can chose to walk or bike instead of drive and write letters to policy-makers.
Parents should take steps to create a climate positive lifestyle, whatever that may look like for your family, and make changes (like going solar!) that reduce your household’s carbon footprint.

-
Harness the power of the sun.
There are so many reasons to go solar! Transitioning to solar will lower your household’s carbon emissions (and your energy bill) while lessening our community’s dependence on dirty fossil fuels. Solar can power your appliances and car, heat and cool your home, and offer backup power in case of an outage.
-
Use less, waste less, enjoy more!
When we consume less, we produce fewer fossil fuel emissions and are gentler on the earth. Learn to reuse, reduce, and recycle the items you already own. Be thankful and enjoy life’s simple pleasures—spending time in nature, being with loved ones, and making a difference to others. Those are Sunsquatch’s favorite ways to Enjoy the Sun!
-
Get politically active.
Although individual action is important, we need to focus on changing the larger system that is dependent on fossil fuels. Stay informed and vote for government officials at all levels who take climate change seriously. If you’re too young to vote, encourage those who can to stand up for you, your future, and the planet.
-
Learn and listen.
Solving the climate crisis requires us all to stay informed and work together. We can’t do that without finding common ground with those who may not share our perspective. Make sure you are educating yourself about the matters at hand so you can have open and impactful conversations with others about the issues facing our planet.
